Original Watercolor: Pati Deuter

Pati Deuter grew up in Los Alamos, New Mexico which is just above Santa Fe. The spirit of the Southwest is reflected in her works. Pati owned and operated a gallery in Mesilla New Mexico and another in Cedaredge Colorado. She moved to Ree Heights South Dakota with her husband Jim in 1997, where they both maintain working studios.

Pati defines her watercolors as visionary art. She uses a combination of cubism and realism to create a unique style. She says “I have a whimsical disregard for what is expected and strive to surprise myself and the viewer with original ideas."

Pati has also been creating embossings for over 25 years. Embossings are created by first making an impression on a metal plate with acid reduction. Tools are used to file and refine the plates to get the detail. After the plate is made she moves to her etching press where she covers the plate with wet arches 140 pound paper and runs them through the press. The paper is embedded into the plate. Each embossing is hand pulled and then hand colored individually with vibrant watercolors. Her work has evolved over the past few years as she has started embellshing the paper with a variety of beads, brass sequins, porcupoine quills and a number of interesting details with hand designed papers.

Pati was included as one of the top five artists featured in a P.B.S. television special titled "Artist Ride" and shows with many distinguished galleries across the country.

About the Art:

Pati's embossed watercolors are truly unique. Although they are signed and numbered, each one is an individual creation. After the print has been embossed, Pati embellishes each one by hand, first with watercolor paints, and then with cut glass seed beads, leather fringe, trade cloth, horse hair, and tin cones.

This piece features a medicine stick, in the shape of a horse, arched above a herd of horses below - representing the seven sioux bands of the northern Lakota.
